Gu-nam, a taxi driver in Yanbian, struggles with a snowballing debt. His wife left for South Korea 6 months ago and he hasn´t heard from her yet. He gambles to make money but always loses. One day, Gu-nam is offered a job by Myeon-ga, a hit man. The job is to assassinate someone in South Korea. Left without choice and desperate, Gu-nam takes on the job for his debts and meet his wife.
After his debut feature film The Chaser (2007) which revealed the capitalistic brutality in a shocking way, director Na presented The Yellow Sea which was more powerful and scarier than the former. This is a grand road movie traveling from Yanbian, China to Seoul and different cities in Korea. As the plots evolve, the characters bear more grudges and go deeper into the cycle of crimes for survival and greed. Na made an ambitious and confrontational drama focusing only on human desire and violence, which is unprecedented and will never exist. [KIM Youngjin]
