Waikiki Brothers is a nightclub band composed of four members. They couldn’t settle in one place and roam about as a freelance band. The band leader Sung-woo and his members find a place to work at Sung-woo´s hometown and settle down there. However, Sung-woo meets his schoolmates, that were innocent in the old days. Now they have changed desolate and he finds the change sad.
Four members of Waikiki Brothers dreamed of becoming musicians but gave up their pursuit. In the end, they regain hope. Director Yim follows all the years of joy and frustration. She rarely uses close-ups in the film but observes them from a distance to fill the traces of failure with love and sympathy. The tawdry band name reminds us of our faded but innocent memories. The film doesn’t stay in nostalgia but praises innermost power pulled from deep inside of our heart no matter how scruffy the life is. [KIM Youngjin]
