Seon plans on developing a resort on Ieoh Island, which belongs to Jeju Island. He boards on a tourist ship for a promotion event. Reporter Cheon who was is in the same ship suddenly disappears and Seon is suspected of murdering him. After Seon was found innocent, he visits Cheon’s hometown to figure out the cause of his death and meets mysterious characters.
The film’s complicated time structure reminds us of Proust’s In Search of Lost Time. The pre-modern atmosphere with myths, ghosts and shamans are mixed with modern symptoms like tourism industry and the destruction of the ecosystem. The clash of shamanism and capitalistic values is led to a serious confrontation. The image of the ocean is overwhelmingly impressive. The director shot the ocean by zooming in the telephoto lens, which made the ocean look like standing up and the horizontal screen turn to vertical and engulfing everything. [KIM Youngjin]
