Can Brutalism be adapted and updated for the 21st century? This was the challenge of aesthetics, philosophy, and construction that architecture firm 6a had to tackle when creating a new residential court for the famous Churchill College at Cambridge.
This experimental film narrates the life of Churchill College, established in 1960. In 2016, the precepts of brutalism using artificial materials were adopted to the original building. The audio-visual diversity found in the black-and-white images, pictures, blueprints, texts and ambience sounds transforms the sediments in the place into a dreamlike state. In order to experience the environment in which trees, architecture, animals and nature all co-exist, we must keep our eyes and ears open. Based on Ben Rivers’ spatial design, Expanded Plus presents Trees Down Here as a one-channel installation. [JANG Byungwon]
