Filmed in the Andean Mountains, the traditional lands of the Northern Chile and Northwest Argentina. Altiplano takes place within ancestral salt flats, volcanic deserts and colored lakes. Fusing earth with sky, day with night, heartbeat with mountains and mineral with iridescent cloud, the film reveals a landscape in which a blue sun threatens to eclipse a blood moon.
This flicker film is set in Altiplano, one of the driest areas on the planet that offers the most surreal landscapes. Malena Szlam portrays the massive plateau, where the ensemble of salt flats, volcanic deserts and colored lakes give the appearance of Mars. Shot on 35mm, the film uses a delicate sound design to convey the alien, castoff texture of land and the blue-red ground surface in a visually unique way. [JANG Byungwon]
