"What did you dream about and how was your life as a teenager?" A woman recalls her youthful memories of her 1970’s while the re-creation of the modernity of the past of China unfolds in front of our eyes. One day, the first breathless animal appears to her, a white horse.
Breathless Animals adopts a narrative method, "animalization of humans" which is the opposite of the personification of animals. Lei Lei uses the old photographs and magazines collected from the flea market that defines the cultural identity of China. By inserting interviews with his mother, animated images and sounds, this film defines the cultural identity of China which overlaps with the Korea’s modernization. The visual narrative filled with nervous images prone to cause epileptic seizure, rhythmical dissonance, uneven connection between scenes is in an inseparable relationship with Chinese history and ideas where the nation and the people are intertwined. The film presents a new vision of documentary by creating an artificial world that goes beyond oral history. [JANG Byungwon]
