Overview

Becky Something is a self-destructive punk rockstar who once filled arenas with her female trio “Something She.” Now she plays in smaller venues while grappling with motherhood, exhausted band mates, nervous record company utives and rising talents. She struggles with sobriety while trying to recapture the creative inspiration that led her band to success.

Review

Punk rock band leader Becky Something brings out the artistic creativity that leads the band to success and pushes her band members, family and her followers to the limit. People around her look at her with admiration, compassion, fear and contempt. Alex Ross Perry’s sixth feature film Her Smell depicts a portrait of a self-destructive artist who lives in the art world. Becky is a problematic person who disturbs judgement. Is Becky an artistic truth-seeker who is a bless to those around her or a curse? Can you take on "her smell"? Perry’s camera goes through the claustrophobic backstage, dressing room and recording studio, following Becky’s conscious. It is a harmful film that provokes one’s senses clashing with internal enemies and a mature work of displaying Perry’s capability of an artist. [JANG Byungwon]

DIRECTOR
Alex Ross PERRY

A 16mm film shot on a budget, Alex Ross Perry’s debut film Impolex (2009) traces a soldier wandering in a European forest during the end of World War II. His first film at Jeonju IFF, The Color Wheel (2011), was about a rowdy couple pinched with autism and loneliness. Since then, the whole of his films from Listen Up Philip (2014) to his latest Her Smell have been introduced at Jeonju IFF. With the actress Elisabeth Moss as his persona, Perry prefers the dusty texture of analog film in the vein of the New York Indie films. His films arouse empathy through lively characters blurting cerebral and entertaining dialogue. As he mentioned in his interview with “Sense of Cinema,” his films are about “lonely people, specifically lonely people going through the worst time in their lives.” His magnum opus, Her Smell, will be screened at this year’s festival.
